Hello, dear Russian language learners. Today I would like to clarify the situation with the cases and prepositions used for denoting time in Russian.
To avoid possible mistakes, let’s remember the following important rule:
By default, for denoting time we use the ACCUSATIVE case.
Most of words denoting time are combined with the preposition “в/во” and take the Accusative case:
в э́то вре́мя — at that/this time
во вре́мя о́тпуска — during the vacation
в сле́дующий раз — next time
в тот моме́нт — at that moment
в да́нный пери́од — in this period; currently
в э́ту секу́нду — at this moment/second
в тру́дный час — at a difficult time/hour
в понеде́льник — on Monday
в про́шлую суббо́ту — last Saturday
в выходны́е — on the weekend
в по́лночь — at midnight
Examples:
— ВО ВРЕ́МЯ уро́ка Никола́й всегда́ отключа́ет телефо́н. // During the lesson, Nikolai always turns the phone off.
— ВО ВТО́РНИК у Ольги выходно́й. // Olga has a day off on Tuesday.
— Дава́й встре́тимся В ПО́ЛДЕНЬ. // Let's meet at noon.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTIONS: nouns denoting long periods of time like “неде́ля” and longer (ме́сяц, год, век, тысячеле́тие).
The noun “неде́ля” is used with the preposition “на” + PREPOSITIONAL case:
— НА ПРО́ШЛОЙ НЕДЕ́ЛЕ я е́здил в Москву́. // Last week I went to Moscow.
— НА СЛЕ́ДУЮЩЕЙ НЕДЕ́ЛЕ я бу́ду за́нят. // I will be busy next week.
The nouns “ме́сяц”, “год”, “век”, “тысячеле́тие” are used with the preposition “в/во” + PREPOSITIONAL case:
— В Э́ТОМ МЕ́СЯЦЕ Анто́н зарабо́тал пятьдеся́т ты́сяч рубле́й. // Anton earned 50 000 rubles this month.
— В ПРО́ШЛОМ ГОДУ́ Оле́г и Мари́на пожени́лись. // Last year, Oleg and Marina got married.
— Алекса́ндр Пу́шкин у́мер В ПОЗАПРО́ШЛОМ ВЕ́КЕ. // Alexander Pushkin died in the century before last.
— Что нас ожида́ет В НО́ВОМ ТЫСЯЧЕЛЕ́ТИИ? // What awaits us in the new millennium?
Any questions, doubts or suggestions? Feel free to leave them in the comments.
