Biotechnology is a well-known contemporary technology that brings benefits to society. While the use of bacteria is normally regarded as positive, someone considers that excessive bacterial manipulation may cause adverse effects on humans. Between these two oppsite opinions, I’m in favor of making more use of bacteria. This essay will specifically discuss the advantages of using biotechnology and how it can be utilized effeciently. Bacteria are very useful for pharmaceutical development and environmental governance. It is vital to produce antibiotics by using bacteria. If the manipulation of bacteria are strictly controlled, vaccines made from private enterprise-driven manufacturing will extremely decrease and consequently it may slow down the development of certain vaccines, such as cancer vaccines. In the meantime, some bacteria are able to break down oil spills or toxic waste. In today’s world, pollution is becoming more and more severe as technology evolves due to growing demand for conventional energy. Therefore, this ability of bacteria to break down toxic waste has great potential for reducing pollution. On the other hand, some people think that bacteia can be dangerous and should be controlled. Though engineered bacteria which may pose risks contain unintended consequences whose effects are invisible, they differ from viruses and could not infect humans. Additionally, the risks of bacterial manipulation may emerge in a negative way. They could be misused in bioterrorism. However, appropriate regulations can help prevent such attacks. In conclusion, the use of bacteria becomes more various than before and these innovations support our society in many aspects. For the above reasons, I believe that we should further tap into biotechnology. For instance, cancer vaccines made from bacteria may appear in the future. Moreover, attacks and calamities associated with bacteria could be avoided through effective governmental control.
