Enrique and a friend, José del Carmen Bustamante, sixteen, venture into El Infiernito to buy marijuana. It is dangerous. On one occasion, José, a timid, quiet teenager, is threatened by a man who wraps a chain around his neck. The boys never linger. They take their joints partway up a hill to a billiard hall, where they sit outside smoking and listening to the music that drifts through the open doors. What do "venture into", "linger", "joint", "partway", "drift", and "open doors" mean in this context?

Hi Lompaket! "Venture into" comes from the word "adventure", so it means to go on an unknown journey or a journey you haven't gone on before. "Linger" means to stay somewhere longer than needed, or stay somewhere when you have no real purpose for staying there. "Joint" is a marijuana cigarette (marijuana rolled in paper). "Partway" means part of the way, or halfway. "Drift" means to come out slowly or move slowly or without much direction. A sailboat on a lake without much wind will be "drifting". "Open doors" just means doors that are open. So the boys can hear music coming out of rooms that have the doors open onto the street. I hope that helps! Ryan
