Learn alphabets, the pronunications & try to read Hindi words - even if you can't understand meaning

Yeah, like Prasad said, once you know the alphabet, you won't be liable to so many mispronunciations (although my pronunciation of aspirations is still bad), you'll begin to get the structure and flow, and you'll know how to actually spell words instead of guessing. Ask a patient speaker how to actually say the common words slowly. I made mistakes trying to learn straight out of a book. But maybe the worst mistake in trying to learn a language is not trying - just try out whatever you learn and get used to confused expressions and exasperated stares.
