Expressions and sayings rely a lot on cultural understanding and are different from place to place - thus there will be some things that do not translate - and sayings and expressions are high on that list.

Oftentimes, however, a saying may translate: it all depends on history and coincidence.

There are also often equivalents - not ones that are the same but equate to the same idea.

I don't know Persian, but using your English translations, I would go with these equivalents and translations:

* "Argument is the spice of life" = "Iron sharpens iron" (a reference to the King James Bible verse Proverbs 27:17)

* "Your place is empty" = "They are empty upstairs" (that is, they have no brain!)

* "Give your ear to me" = "Lend me your ear." (Let me discuss something with you.)

* "Your eyes see pretty" = "You have rose-colored glasses." (you don't see the negative reality, but are seeing false optimism and happiness.)

Granted I may be misunderstanding the sayings... but there you go anyway.

@Nadiamiss : Thank you ! Actually, if it not too much trouble, maybe you could give the meaning of the other sayings ? I only know about half of them.

No Sophie, It means "I am busy" .

For example they ask you : can you help me? (mituni komakam koni) and you can say : na,dastam bande (No, I am busy)

----

Thanks Mei , I completely agree with you . the thing you said where different with the actual meanings , but very nice to know.
