Advantage of having a penfriend

Hi!

I was just wondering whether you have any experiences with having a penfriend - you know, sending and looking forward to receive letters from a person from different country :)

Did a penfriend help you to improve your language skills? Does your friendship still last?

Would you be willing to begin such a relationship?

I enjoy the thought of having a penfriend, especially in the earlier stages of language study. It can give you time to look up words you know, there is less stress to recall immediately, and give you additional practice.  It would be even better if you could trust each other enough to exchange your mailing address for real letters and postcards, beyond emails. Of course, that goes against the grain of modern technology.

I had penfriends back when you still wrote on paper and sent them in envelopes. The first one back in my schooldays, two in the US, it ended pretty quickly before I turned 14. Can't say it helped much in learning English, watching the telly was more helpful, I guess. But later it helped a lot in learning how to read and write in French, and how to read in Dutch. It's not the same in the Internet age. Foreign countries felt exotic back then, now they don't. I read English newspapers in no different way than I read those from my own country. Writing letters isn't as fun when it all goes over the Internet, and is too instantaneous. The old feeling of waiting for a reply (paper mail) isn't there, and sending paper mail seems so cumbersome now when there is instant messaging, so I don't expect to take it up again. I exchanged emails with a native Spanish speaker for about a year-and-a-half. I found it really helpful to improve my writing as well as use the language in that drafting a longer email gave me time to look up words, formulate sentences, etc. It was great and I learned a lot about her country and culture.

Note: Native speakers also use the word "pen pal" when talking about someone with whom we exchange letters through the mail.

I'm not yet experiencing that kind of penfriend. But due to the modernization now, I experienced sending and receiving messages from different country thru emails. It has a big advantage for me because the way you exchange each messages is very easy now unlike letters, (this is just my opinion) you need to wait for days before you've got a response from a friend who's from another country. And, a penfriend does not improve your speaking skills, but it improves your writing skills.

Although, I find penfriend as exciting. :)

These relationships don't last that much. Although itis great to have a penfriend with whom you can share a lot of things that you won't with your real life friends. Is it easy to find one ?How do you know that this is the right person? Some people are just horrible.
