Identify what it is that you need more work on and search for materials on it. Ask your language partner if he or she can explain to you  on it.

Understand the grammar and see how it's being used. When writing or talking with someone in an exchange, choose a particular topic that would give you practice in writing or speaking in the area that you need help on, whether it may be grammar or expressions.

Offer to go over grammar on the language that you can help the other person with and see if another day, the other person can do the same.

While going over the grammar, you can practice translating the phrases with the person, so it's a win win situation for both.

Good luck on your studies and your next tests!

You could also look for past papers and practice a little.

What is the aim of your English exam? Is it primarily grammar or essay based? How much of it is speaking or listening? As others have mentioned identify the part you are struggling with and focus on improving it. I know the majority of English exams in college or university are not really based on practical conversation.  You are taking a step forward with your post. Maybe practice in the journal section on italki and let native speakers make some corrections for you. I am sure if you make a good plan you will pass the next exam.

Hello ... yes, it is important to try to figure out what areas you are weak in.... writing, speaking, listening, reading comprehension.  Maybe it is because you are just nervous?  When we are nervous we often can't think very clearly.  I agree with the other suggestions that you should get a language partner or teacher to help you work on those 'tough areas'... the best is someone with experience teaching for test taking.  I would be happy to help you.  Find me under the Community Teachers from the USA.  Good luck!

You should stop looking for a "magic bullet", Cathy. Try hard. Do you? If so, try harder. Language partners is a "band aid solution". Get some good teacher. There are loads of on this site.

Good luck with your English and never lose hope.
