Most Japanese is wearing a mask in Japan recently.

An American have a question about Japanese.

"Why do most Japanese is wearing a mask ?"

I'll tell you the reason.

Because they are protect from a flue and a cold.

Some women have another reasons. You know, most women want to be thought beautiful, so we need much time to put on a make up, but if we wear a mask, we don't have to do it.

The ranking of the reasons

①to hide for not wearing make up

②to keep warm of our face and skin

③to show our face smaller

I had always wondered about that when I saw it on TV, so thanks for explaining it! I always assumed that people were afraid of getting sick, but it's interesting to hear that there are other reasons, too. I feel sorry for women who feel the need to hide when they don't wear makeup. I feel that makeup should be a choice and not a requirement imposed by society.

It would be akward to go on a date with a Japanese girl to find out that she refused to take that mask off just because she was lazy to put her makeup on.

It means we want to be thought our face is smaller than real size.

What do you mean by "to show our face smaller" ??

Well, even though I know the sort of masks you wear are actually almost useless for preventing spread of airborne pathogens, I still wish that we had this culture in Australia too.

But yeah, I'd also heard about the keeping the face warm (& I guess the humidity healps against your throat drying out) & against hayfever. Makes sense.
