Watching TV shows to learn English

Hi everyone. I have been learning English for two or so years. Despite the fact that I know a lot of words sometimes I feel like I know nothing. This feeling brings me down quite often. Anyway I keep going. I like watching American tv shows from which you can get some bits of the culture. Ok, I would like to talk about ways the other learners use when watching tv shows. I don't like watching with subtitles because they are destructive in my opinion, every time I see these white letters underneath the screen I start reading it instinctively. But at the same time sometimes you need them to understand what has been said or meant. Ok, usualy I understand maybe 80 or 90 percent of the whole thing if it is not a very specific field. Some episodes you understand easily enough but the others not. In such cases I try to look up new words but if there are lots of them It gets excessively boring and usualy I give up. My question to everyone here is What do you use and what technique would you recommend me to employ to make it more enjoyable?

Primarily, I do not think learning can be as easy and cozy as sitting in a couch to watch a movie with no attention. I do believe learning is a process of brain redevelopment which requires challenging, thinking, , feedback and revision.  It seems hard to ensure every part of learning is so enjoyable with fun as many free riders think whereas you may arrange activities to make your learning more workable and happily to a certain degree over a long term. In contrast with organized English learning materials,  loose lines and casual conversation in a movie is seemingly less useful than organized English books, audio materials or exercises even though it is somewhat more tedious than a romantic English movie.

Watching movies or drama is a good supplement to your learning but you still have more sustainable activities to consolidate your learning.

Hi Alexander!

I don't like watching tv show to learn,, because my brain is not accostumed with the speed of the speeach.

I realized that I've improved when I started learning books and read the audiobooks together. Each writter has a special way to write and usually they use basically the same words, so you learn trough repetition.

Hi! Depending on the show I can watch it with or without subtitles (in the original language). I think it is a good way to improve your listening skills, I really do

I've used tv shows to help me with the familiarity of syllables. Once I learn a phrase in my studies, then I try to notice it and it's variants in the tv shows that I watch. In my case, it is Korean, but I believe tv shows are a good supplement to other study methods.

Hey man, I am not the best person to recommend you any technique to learn. I just wanna talk abaut my learning too and I think that TV shows is a good way to train your listening and your reading (if you use subtittles), and we must watch it not once but manytimes until learn all from that.
