What motivates you to learn English?

Why are you learning English now, or why might you want to learn English in the future?

Is it the global value, social value, work opportunities, or maybe you're just curious about the language?

I'm curious to hear your opinions on the matter and potentially help you with any future endeavors.

All comments, opinions, and questions welcome!

Hi Stephen
I started learning English because of my brother. He is an English native speaker while I just speak Spanish, we both were raised in different countries and cultural backgrounds. Trying to get to know him better, having fun times and just communicate with him was a challenge for us without knowing each other's language. I remember once he sent to me a letter written entirely in English, and of course I didn't get a grasp of what he wrote. For his birthday I called him to congratulate him, but using Spanish wasn't a good idea haha he just could mutter "gracias" back. My biggest motivation is the possibility to communicate effectively with him.

I started to learn English in a preschool grade. I liked new names of animals and things around me. When I entered the first year of school English classes were boring, because we started it from alphabet which I knew. I liked watching English cartoons instead.I liked Danger mouse, Pepa Pig, Horrible histories, Mr Ben and others. This way I learnt English without much of the learning.

My motivation to learn English now is to learn how to express thoughts clearly so that people and I could understand me. In the future I want to write a book and it requires good knowledge and usage of the language.

P.S. If you see any even not grammatical mistakes, feel free to correct.

Hi teacher stephen. First o all, what motivate me to learn English is that it is possible for me to communicate with people in all over the world. Totally one of the factors that limit us in communicating is language. So by knowing a unique world language like ENGLISH we can remove this obstacle. Secondly I keen on learning foreign languages because it expands my point of view. In this way i can find more confidence and fluency in all of my works.

Thank you all for replying to my discussion question.

I am glad to see so many different reasons for wanting to learn English.

Behnoush, I agree with you. Speaking English can help you communicate and learn new ideas from all over the world. :)

Ejan, you are in a very interesting situation. That is pretty cool you have your brother to help chat with and get motivated to learn English. Luckily, Spanish and English can be quite similar at times, so it should be fun for you when you get the hang of it.

Mohamed, you're right. Many doors will be closed off from your mind unless you expand your views and language skills. ^^

Kauan, what do you want to do in the UK?

May, you're absolutely right. Being able to travel and experience different cultures and ideas will broaden your way of thinking, and it can help you understand many people and their perspectives. Good reason! :)

Schoolboy, I agree. The first bits of language learning can be boring, but they are essential for learning, so you can get to the fun stuff like cartoons and topics that interest you. That's awesome that you want to write a book. What would the topic be if you did decide to write a book?

Tam, what scholarship are you applying for?

Fanfam, I'm glad you can enjoy learning English. Just remember, everyone starts somewhere and we were all beginners once. Keep going and keep improving! :)
