To Proofread or Not to Proofread ... That is the Question
If you are using a spellchecker or grammar checker app, please turn it off.

********************************************

Proofreading - defined
-  the act of finding and correcting mistakes in copies of printed text before the final copies are printed

The Importance of Proofreading
Before submitting or printing an academic research paper, essay, email, memo, or any other written document, it is very important to carefully proofread it. Proofreading of written material is the final step that must be taken before a document can be considered complete.

How to Proofread
You should read each word individually and search for errors in spelling, word usage, grammar, and punctuation.

Three major, embarrassing, costly proofreading mistakes
1  The original name of Google was supposed to be Googol, but when they registered the domain name they misspelled it as Google.
2  The University of Wisconsin made a massive error when they handed out over four thousand graduate diplomas with the name Wisconson typed at the top of every diploma.
3  A clerical error in 2006 may have cost Italian airline Alitalia a massive $7.72 million USD. According to reports the airline mistakenly advertised a flight from Toronto to Cyprus for the cut-price fee of $39 instead of $3,900.

Your challenge
Proofread the following passage.
There are fewer than five spelling mistakes, missing articles, and incorrect verb tenses.
Can you find them?

Once upon a time he built a machine and it was working well, but he decided to change it. The new machine was very different from old machine and the new machine did not work properly. The machine users were very upsat and took their time and made the effort to help the machine builder understand what the machine builder will have to do to make the user’s happy. Instead of listening to the users and to take advantage of their helpful advice, the builder decided to paint the machine different colour in the hope that everyone would be distracted. The cosmetic change does not improve the sitaution so the users begged the builder to address the functional root problems. In response, the builder neither repsonded to nor thanked the users for their concern. Later, builder realized that it should have been listened to it’s customers.

Dan and Terecia and everyone else

You may already know some or all of the following, but I thought it might be of interest to a few people:

The Naming of Google

If Larry Page’s friend had been more cautious with his spelling, we may never have heard of the word Google. Rumor has it that Larry Page’s officemate, Sean Anderson, suggested the name googol (derived from a googolplex: 10^googol) as a name for the search engine. Page, who liked the name, was keen on shortening it to googol and asked Anderson to register it as a domain name. Unfortunately, Anderson researched google.com and Page registered it immediately. When they eventually discovered the error, it was too late.

1 googol = called a googolplex = 1.0 × 10 to the 100th power = 1 followed by one hundred zeroes:

10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Terecia

Gog goo eyes is a cute, old expression.
Here's the meaning for anyone who doesn't know:

The definition of goo-goo eyes is looking at someone with extreme adoration or love, sometimes so much so that it becomes a bit bothersome to others.

An example of goo-goo eyes is the look a woman has when her true love arrives to pick her up for a date.

<a name="_GoBack"></a>1 googol = 1.0 × 10100<o:p></o:p>

Very shortly after Google began, I remember writing to them asking if they were named after the 1930s comic strip character, Barney Google.

Allow me to try:

Once upon a time, there's a machine builder. He built a machine and it was working well, but he decided to change it. The new machine was very different from the old one, it did not work properly. The machine users were very upset. They took their time and made the effort to help him to understand what he should have to do to make the users happy.
Instead of listening to them and taking advantage of their helpful advice, the builder decided to paint the machine in a different colour in the hope that everyone would be distracted. The cosmetic change did not improve the situation so they begged him to address the functional root problems. In response,  he neither responded to nor thanked them for their concern.
Later, the builder realized that he should have listened to his customers.

Forgive me for I couldn't give highlight to the replaced words. The system didn't allow me to submit the comment with highlighted words. Anyhow, it's really fun doing the proofreading, though I'm not sure whether I make it better or worse.

Now I am anxious to see if you can see the results of my proofreading.

Dan Smith

What was their answer? Thanks to you Dan, I learned a new phrase, goo-goo eyes. That sounds adorable.
