Typing accents on my computer

Hi all! This frustrates me so much. I'm trying to type accents on my computer (U.S. keyboard) and so far, I've been doing it like holding down the ALT key and typing something like 0191 on my number pad to get ¿ (as an example). But sometimes when I do this, it causes my computer to do weird things, like causes the screen to flip, causes me to leave the page I'm on, opens a new browser tab while closing the first...

Surely there must be an easier way to do this! I've got an option to change my keyboard to Spanish, but I still don't know how to enter accents. Help!

There are many options, depending on your hardware, software, languages, and personal preferences. You can use your OS settings to set up different keyboards, without having to buy any additional hardware — but you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the new layout. You may be able to set up an “international English” keyboard, which would be what you’re used to but with relatively easy ways to get international characters. Or, you could set up a Spanish keyboard (do an image search to see what you’ll be getting). A Spanish keyboard obviously facilitates typing in Spanish, as well as Catalá (more accents, letters like ç, and you can even type “paral·lel”), Galego, French and other Latin languages. You can even use the dieresis to fake an umlaut for German (actually, I think the character is the same). BTW, I use the Spanish keyboard for typing French, because the French one rearranges some of the letters. A good option for English speakers learning French is the Canadian French keyboard, since it’s the same as an English keyboard but with easy access to French diacritics.

I would suggest you to use the US International keyboard. Diacritics and letters like cedilla are typed as a sequence of two keys: for example, to get the è glyph you have to press the ` key, then the key for the letter e.

Hi Sherice,

For windows, if you click on settings - time and language - preferred languages - add a language, you can then choose other language keyboard variations, which you can then change with one click (once added) at the bottom right of your screen. For example, mine is currently in English to type this message so "ENG" is displayed. If I click on it now I have a list with FI (Finnish) POL (Polish) Deu (German) and SPA (Spanish).

The only thing to take into account is that you will have to learn where the keys are. I use German the most, so I now know without thinking that hyphen key (-) is a ß, the semi colon and comma keys also provide my umlaut characters, etc. In the long run it is much easier as it will become second nature. I hope that helps.

There are videos on youtube that explain how to install and use different keyboards.
