What makes you edit a post?
When I started using italki, it wasn't possible to edit posts, which of course was sometimes embarassing because one couldn't change typos. Now it's possible to edit everything apart from the titles (so embarassing typos still remain there) but it's not possible to delete an entire discussion. I wonder why, as it is possible to delete notebook entries.

I only edit my posts to correct typos, add additional information and in very rare cases, maybe only two times or so, I deleted an entire comment. But when I edit more than typos I explain what and why I changed the post.

There are other users who frequently change or delete their posts (there was also a user who deleted the content of every single post they ever made) and I wonder why. Of course, they can write what they want and change their posts but it does make discussions harder to follow (in addition to the problem that users might get blocked and posts referring to them look pretty out of context). Once I was attacked for having deactivated my account because that resulted in all my discussions and corrections being gone. There are other forums where posts by deleted accounts remain visible.

What is the reason behind deleting the content of the OP of a discussion instead of asking the italki team to completely delete the whole thread? Do you think it's fair to other users who participated in a discussion to completely change it?

Do you edit or delete posts frequently or rarely? What are reasons for editing or deleting a post?

I also edit my posts rather often for typos, in which case I don't mention what was edited. Typos are unfortunately a part of life with my multilingual phone keyboard where I Swype (thumb slide) with predictive text rather than key in individual letters. However, when I insert some extra information later, I do that with a specific edit note. So far I have never deleted a comment and see no reason to do that, at least until now. Even if my comment happens to be disagreeable to some or is downvoted (happens very rarely), I still stand by what I said. It would really be pretty irresponsible and deceptive if I went around changing and deleting my statements at the drop of a hat.

I’m not a big fan of the “edit” button and I regret asking italki for it for years as it was used cowardly by some members! I see it as a coward act because if someone wrote their opinion about something they better stick to it if they still defend it on the thread to make it clear for everyone what was said in the first place.
The only times I liked it when someone edited their post and changed the content is when there was an apology in that edit for the lack of understanding in the first time.

I try not to edit but if I do it’s usually to rewrite when I feel that the way I phrased a sentence was weak. I also edit when I add something that I forgot to write in the first time I wrote my post.

I try to type my posts correctly the first time. Not only because I want to input my comments correctly, but because I don't want someone to think I altered the content of my comment. I do remember one time I needed to edit a comment because I didn't realize my explanation wasn't clear until I already posted the comment. If that happens, then I feel like I have to note the edit like this:

*Edited for clarity.
*Edited for typos.
*Edited for clarity and typos.

I don't want to have to do that every single time I edit a post.

On occasion, I edit a post to add information or to clarify a point.

My most common edit is to FORGET to put in a capital I for I =me, this is because I do it automatically when writing with pen and paper, it is usually drilled into all native English speakers who attended school, but I very often forget to hold down the caps key to get the capital I=me.
I actually forgot and had to go back three times up until this point, to use CAPS I=me.
When ever I notice this mistake even at a later time/date I edit and correct, because we cannot keep reminding English learners about this and then we ourselves make the same mistake.

I also constantly reread what I have written previously and rewrite it, if I think it can be made clearer. This I do anyway and is not related to being on italki.

I deleted many comments when I first arrived here which coincided with testing 'Grammarly' that was forever trying to force me to say and write words when I knew what words I wanted to write and for what reason.

'Grammarly' is good but it forces you to write only in a certain style. It has been taken off my computer since about after a month or two of arriving here.

I see nothing wrong or embarrassing about editing. It happens in normal daily life especially when dealing with officialdom and official things where you wish to not make costly mistakes and even the most qualified teachers and professors make mistakes.
Add to this the fact that English is a confusing language in many ways and anything and everything written or spoken can be misunderstood by anybody at any time. No speaker or writer is immune from this, A1 to C2 inclusive and professors. I have had university teachers lectures and professors admit to making mistakes and informing to disregard the last lesson and given out corrections.
NB one edit so far after submitting I noticed a missing word. If I did not edit learners would have a bad sample sentence to copy.
