"Press the button" What does this phrase mean? And how should I use it?

I heard that people say the phrase "press the button", but I am not quite sure its meaning and how to use it. So, could you explain it and give me an example sentence. Thank you very much!!!

"press the button" isn't an idiom that I know of... it just literally means "press the button". Usually when you press a button you are activating something or turning something on or off.

Or do you mean "push my buttons"? That is an idiom every American knows. If you are pushing my buttons you are intentionally doing things that annoy me. Most likley becasue you are trying to get a reaction out of me.

You are in a lift/elevator. It's not moving. Someone says "did you press the button?". In other words, did you select a floor from the list on the panel in the lift?

The word "button" is often used to describe an input device on a machine or on an electronic device to which pressure is applied to switch the machine on or off.

A button is also of course something worn on clothes.
