Commercial Airliners(3)
Now you have a chance to take a look at the cockpit.
many commercial airliners have 5 or 6 CRT digital screens. the middle one is the upper "EICAS",
full name "Engine Instruments & Crew Alert System". Look left,
you'll find a part of compass and a heading above. That's "ND",
full name "Navigation Display". Beside,
you can see a screen with an attitude indicator in the middle. That's "PFD",
full name "Primary Flight Display".
All these screens are very important for pilots. Upper EICAS provide engine information,
and alert messages.
ND provide Navigation information. PFD provide general information of the plane. Speed at the left,
and altitude at the right. Look over the upper EICAS.
You will find some knobs and some numbers above them.
That's the Autopilot Panel. Pilots don't have to put their hands on the joystick the whole flight.
They use Autopilot to help them. Over the numbers, you may found "SPD", "HDG" and "ALT". They are Speed,
Heading and Altitude.
Pilots only have to set a couple of numbers and engage Autopilot while they don't want to hold the joystick.
There are also lots of switches at the top. They are the lights, electronic, hydraulic,
fuel pump and the pack control switches. They are VERY VERY useful for pilots.
Until now, Airbus A380 is the biggest commercial airliner.
The longest commercial Airliner is the Airbus A340.
With technology improve, the cockpit of the whole-new Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" has less knobs, and more LCD touch screens.
They also have HUD (Head-Up Display). They are more automatic, and the passengers are more comfortable.
Commercial Airliners always have better service, faster speed,
and fly longer distance than small airplanes.
They are convenient taking people around the world. It is the fastest public air vehicle,
and it is improving every day.
