Because we do not really interact in class, some classes have online 'discussion boards' where we have to answer questions and talk about something the teacher assigns...that's what I have today.

In this context can I translate "hunkering down" with living there for awhile? These cities are continuously listed as the best places for young people to live. Hunkering down in, or even just visiting, a place where the majority of the neighborhood shares your values, interests, and age, is super empowering.

It is a phrase often used casually and not often heard in formal conversation. "We hunkered down in the living room and waited for the storm to pass."
