What I mean to say is: I planned to plant trees but... "to tell the truth, I ENDED UP NOT planting trees, instead I cut weeds at my bean field." I forgot to say "제가 대신 사촌이 그나무를 심었다." ☞ "나대신/저대신 사촌이 그 나무를 심었다" (verb)+게 되다 = "to NOT plan to do something but END UP DOING it"..... right? ☞ I think it should be "to plan to do sth but end up sth" meaning "~ (하)려고 했는데 (결국) ~ (하)게 되다/되었다. (*sth = something) Getting back to your first sentence, I planned to plant trees but... to tell the truth, I ENDED UP NOT planting trees, instead I cut weeds at my bean field. "사실 나무를 심으려고 했는데 (결국) 나무는 못 심고 대신 내 콩밭에서 잡초를 뽑았다." 1) I planned to plant trees but - 나무를 심으려고 했는데(심으려고 계획했는데) (*to plan to do sth - ~(하)려고 (계획)하다) 2) I ended up not planting trees - (결국) 나무를 못 심게 되었다. = (결국) 나무를 심지 못 하게 되었다. = (결국) 나무를 못 심었다(more natural) Can you use it in a negative form? meaning "I planned to do it but, As it turned out/I ended up NOT doing____" 안 (verb)+게 됬다.....or (verb)+게 안 됬다. ☞ Yes, you can put the negation making particle "못" or "안" before verbs or adjectives depending on contexts, but here "못" is better.^^ so that, it can be... "~ (하)려고 했는데 (결국) ____(하)지 못 하게 되었다" or "~ (하)려고 했는데 (결국) 못___(하)게 되었다" Here are some examples, (원래) 커피을 마시려고 했는데, 커피는 못 마시고 대신 차를 마셨다. I planned/was going to drink a cup of coffee, I ended up not drinking the coffee I had tea instead. 못 마시고(more natural) = 못 마시게 되고 = 마시지 못 하게 되고 (active forms are always preferred in Korean) 원래 말레이시아로 가려고 했는데 결국 못가고 인도네시아로 갔다. I planned to visit Malaysia but I ended up not going there, I went to Indonesia instead. 못 가고 = 못 가게 되고 = 가지 못하게 되고 ^__________^
