British and American English are differentiated most commonly by their accents and spelling. American English tends to pronounce vowels in a more straightforward manner, whereas British English tends to sound like there are more vowels in the word than there are in the spelling. British and American have different slang, as well. In America, what is called an Elevator is called a Lift in Britain. There are many types of American accents and British accents, and finding out the differences in each can be quite fun. British English is considered by many to sound more proper and elegant than American English. I'm American, and I think so too. Hope this helped.

The slang is very different. In US english a "fag" would be a rude way to call a homosexual - in British English it would mean a "cigarette" . Paper money in US english might be "buck" - I have 5 bucks = I have 5 dollars. in British English paper money might be "quid" - "it costs 5 quid" = it costs 5 British Pounds. So - besides accent, I think the use of slang might be confusing for a learner of English.
