The differences between British English and American English?

British and American English are differentiated most commonly by their accents and spelling. American English tends to pronounce vowels in a more straightforward manner, whereas British English tends to sound like there are more vowels in the word than there are in the spelling. British and American have different slang, as well. In America, what is called an Elevator is called a Lift in Britain. There are many types of American accents and British accents, and finding out the differences in each can be quite fun. British English is considered by many to sound more proper and elegant than American English. I'm American, and I think so too.
Hope this helped.

The slang is very different. In US english a "fag" would be a rude way to call a homosexual - in British English it would mean a "cigarette" . Paper money in US english might be "buck" - I have 5 bucks = I have 5 dollars. in British English paper money might be "quid" - "it costs 5 quid" = it costs 5 British Pounds. So - besides accent, I think the use of slang might be confusing for a learner of English.

The average Brit sounds like he/she has a table leg stuck up the ass. The average American sounds like he/she didn't finish primary school.

That's the question people always ask,but first of all...they're all English.
They differ a lot indeed in my own views.
We can say American English is the product and development of English.
1)they have different words pronunciation..the words spelling are different, but are similar on the whole.like:centre(英式)¢er(美式),and so on.,
2)And sometimes the same thing has different relevant word in those two English..like..汽油,in British English,it's petrol, but in American E,it's gasonline...
3)they have different words oral pronunciation,读音不同。like...the [a] in BrE is often read as[æ]in AmE.英式英语的[a]在美式里常念成[æ]等....不同点还是有点多的.
4)and,AmE is more casual...it's not so formal as British English.
5)Their grammar are little different,too...like,"Did you have your lunch yet?"(美式)=Have you had your lunch?(英式)AmE sometimes use past tense tense instead of perfect tense
6)Notice the alphabet【r】in British English, sometimes it reads like the"R"in Spanish,Russian or some similar pronunciation...英式的"r"有时很像西语,俄语等里面的大舌音。建议你看看《哈利波特二》,开头部分,哈利的伯父准备把他锁在房间里,在窗子上上锁,说了一句话:you're never gonna see these freaky friends...那个演员就把"r"念成了大舌音
