just be yourself,cashiers are supposed to be looked down

How to say to cashers/waiters vary from person to person.
When I get change back from them, I say "ありがとうございます！", 
but some of my friends just say "どうも" or say nothing.

I think you cannot be too polite if you say what you think is the politest.
