THE shouldn't be left out because THE WALLET refers to John's wallet but not anybody else's. Do you agree? Think you!

If we new for sure it is his wallet, we would see the word his rather than the.  "His wallet."  I am not convinced it is his until I am told so.   "The" should not be left out unless it is replaced by his, or a, or even "said" because it is a wallet that has been talked about.  "they brought said wallet..." believe it or not is sometimes used in document lingo.
