I would have arrived on time but I missed my train. Except - would be something that was missed I polished all the furniture except for that chair. You would probably not use 'but' and 'except' in the same sentence. Also you would not use 'other than' and 'apart from' in the same sentence. 'other than' and 'apart from' have essentially the same meaning.
