"Io abito" può essere sempre sostituito da "Io vivo", ma non è detto che si possa fare il contrario perchè "Io vivo" può avere anche altri significati.

esempi:

Io vivo in una bella casa a Torino / Io abito in una bella casa a Torino

Io vivo pensando a lei / Io trascorro la mia vita pensando a lei

Questa pianta vive solo in ambienti umidi / Questa pianta è adatta solo ad ambienti umidi

Sto vivendo un periodo particolarmente felice della mia vita / Sto passando (o trascorrendo) un periodo particolarmente felice della mia vita

Solo nel primo caso puoi usare "abitare" al posto di "vivere". Vivere può avere anche il significato di trascorrere, passare, adattarsi, affrontare, etc.
