The several, a large African wildcat, hunts like a dog ____ like other members of the cat family. A. instead B. rather than C. so D. rather not Note: None of the answers sounds right to me. I chose D. but the solution is B. Maybe I’m not getting the meaning and structure of the sentence. I thought it should be “African wildcat hunts more like a dog than (like) other members of the cat family.” I might be wrong though…. What do you think?Correction: Replace "several" with "serval." It was my typo, my apologies.A. instead B. rather than C. so D. rather not Sorry I forgot to post the answers. :p

The answer is B. In this case "rather than" can be translated to "and not". A would be ok if it was "instead of". But just "instead" is incorrect.

"Rather" doesn't have the same meaning in "rather than" as it does in "rather not". "Rather than" means "instead of". "Rather not" means "do/does not want to" (for example: I would rather not go to the movies tonight.) You understood the sentence correctly. It's saying that the African wildcat hunts like a dog instead of like other cats. So "rather than" is the right answer.
