What does "Alto" mean here? I'm watching Lost. Here when the hairy fat guy Hurley wanted to stop the Korean guy called Jin, he shouted, "Alto." However, in my dictionary, 'alto' means 'a singing voice with a lower range than that of a soprano' I don't understand. Please tell me why. Thanks!

It's possible that Hurley was using the Spanish word "alto" (closely related to the English word "halt") to mean stop.

Brian is right; Hurley means "stop/halt" when he says "alto".

I've found a copy of the script: http://leethomson.myzen.co.uk/Lost/Lost_1x12_-_Hearts_and_Minds.pdf He does indeed say 'alto'. Brian could be right. If 'Jin' has a very high pitched voice, it's possible Hurley was referring to that. Otherwise, it must be some kind of reference within the show I don't know of.
