Will
Difference between the verbs 待, 住, and 呆 Could someone explain the subtle differences between the verbs 待, 住, and 住 in the following sentences: 我们在北京待了一个星期。 我们在北京住了一个星期。 我们在北京呆了一个星期。 This sentence is supposed to describe that we stayed in Beijing for a week (stayed in hotel as tourists, never went back). I had native speakers suggest each one of these in their corrections of my notebook, but not sure what the difference is. Sorry, I cannot express this question in Mandarin! Thanks for your input!

We stayed in Beijing for a week 我们在北京住了一个星期。 We lived in Beiijing for a week 我们在北京呆了一个星期。 We stayed in Beijing for a week 呆 is a synonym to 待, they are the same in the meaning, but 呆 have another meaning which is totally different to 待, it means" gawk" to describe a person who is retarded in reaction and awkward. you can find for the form of the word"呆" which is consisted of 口 and 木, 木 refers to woond, wood would not feel pain like us. it also refers "numb"(麻木) In dail life , if someone was lost in thought and retarded in reaction we would say" 呆子!(gawk)” it sounds a little bit pejorative. hope my explanation is helpful to you~

I think 我们在北京呆了一个星期 is wrong, the better usage is 我们在北京待了一个星期. 住 usually for a long time stay but 待 usually for a short time stay

呆 並不作 居住 或 滯留 解 呆 作動詞使用時 僅作 發楞 解 如 水滸傳˙第五回:「魯智深……一壺酒、一盤肉,都吃了,太公對席看見,呆了半晌。」 欲表達 居住 或 滯留 之意時 應使用 待 說成 我待在北京 而非 我呆在北京 同音不可任意假借 人云亦云 以訛傳訛 習非成是 徒造成今日中文的紛亂
