We can no longer afford the cost of ____ two cars, so we’re selling one. A. controlling B. operating C. running D. managing Note: Except for A, the rest of the answers seem more or less acceptable. If this question is doable, do you think there is a logic in choosing the best answer? Thanks

running It costs money to run a car. There is no logic involved here. The only expression is "run a car". He can't afford the cost of running a car. He can't afford the cost of running two businesses.

In a normal family situation, B would be the best answer.

running, keeping, maintaining, owning are all good

I disagree with the answer selected. I also believe that "operating" is the best choice. I might "run" a business, but I operate a vehicle.

This is not a very good question. None of the choices work very well. A. Controlling a car could mean several things, like steering the car (costs nothing), or possessing (owning) the car (costs money). B. Operating the car is more specific because it involves using the steering wheel and pedals, which is costs nothing. C. Running the car can mean having the car turned on without anyone driving (just letting the engine run). That would have a cost because you are using some gas, but that cost is not a lot. D. Managing a car doesn't really make sense. People never say they "manage cars" in normal conversation, unless maybe if they are a car dealer selling many cars. The best answer would be "owning", since to own a car, you must make monthly payments. You can also use "renting", "leasing", "maintaining", or "gas for".
