How would you explain “half -partition” in the context?
The ornate Victorian face of the Tottenham pub rose up behind the rubble and roadworks, and Strike, pleasurably aware of the large amount of cash in his pocket, pushed his way through its doors, into a serene Victorian atmosphere of gleaming scrolled dark wood and brass fittings. Its frosted glass half-partitions, its aged leather banquettes, its bar mirrors covered in gilt, cherubs and horns of plenty spoke of a confident and ordered world that was in satisfying contrast to the ruined street. Strike ordered a pint of Doom Bar and took it to the back of the almost deserted pub, where he placed his glass on a high circular table, under the garish glass cupola in the ceiling, and headed straight into the Gents, which smelled strongly of piss.
How would you explain “half -partition” in the sentence: Its frosted glass half-partitions, its aged leather banquettes, its bar mirrors covered in gilt…?
Thanks!

A partition is a wall or dividing feature of a room, in this instance it is frosted glass. So in this case a half-partition would be used to separate the floor space but not completely block the view between two rooms. Think of it in terms of a glass wall that is only waist-high or so. It physically prevents someone from walking directly into another part of the room without blocking the view into that part of the room. You see this a lot in restaurants that want an open atmosphere, but don't want customers to roam freely.

a pane of (frosted) glass meant to divide the tables or booths or parts of the room at the pub, but these pieces of glass don't go all the way to the ceiling, perhaps just high enough to go over someone's head who is sitting
