Can I use ''sein'' instead of ''werden'' in this sentence? Das wäre wirklich schade gewesen, die kann nämlich bis zu Fünfunddreißig Jahre alt werden. I don´t understand why it´s used werden instead of sein.

Werden means here "to become". If you want to say, "can be" then you can use "kann sein"

X kann bis zu 35 Jahre alt sein = statement about the actual state. X might be up to 35 years old. X kann bis zu 35 Jahre alt werden = statement about the possible future. X might last/be alive for a total of 35 years.
