According to the dictionary, this means the person / animal becomes unconscious. This "unconscious" mean the person / animal is like sleeping or is anawake of the danger?

Example:

The animals are stunned before slaughter.

(are the animals awake or not?)

Answer

If something is unconscious, then it means they are not awake. They technically aren't asleep either if it is a form of stunning.  They won't feel pain when unconscious, but they will when they recover.
