how can grenades exist in Hannibal times? "You did not lag behind, Baalyathon." "Lag?" The officer laughed as soldiers gathered around to listen in. "When it was between you and Hannibal, I made sure I lagged behind. It was safer." "Safer?" "I still recall the grenades you and Hannibal fabricated. You caused such chaos." "Well," Euripides looked a little irritated, "I was only acting out what Homer described in the book when the Greeks besieged Troy." "But Hannibal was amazed." what is the grenade mean in the sentence?

Grenades in Hannibal's times were pottery sphere's or jars filled with something. They could be filled with bees, poisonous snakes or scorpions, or they could be filled with some flammable fluid derived from oil. Anything that would disrupt or injure the enemy. At least this is my recollection.
