how to read big numbers Hi, I've always wondered how, in spoken english, are read big numbers; in the following examples, i will write down the way i'm used to reading them (that's probably the most formal), and i'd like you to write whether it's even the most common, otherwise please write down how those numbers are commonly read in spoken english, especially in American English: 842 = eight hundreds forty two 6.554 = six thousands and five hundreds fifty four 152.600 = one hundred fifty two thousands and six hundreds (??) 1.4 million = one million four hundreds thounsands OR one million four (??) thanks to everybody

In British English (which I know is different): 842 = eight hundred and forty-two 6,554 = six thousand, five hundred and fifty-four 152,600 = one hundred and fifty-two thousand, six hundred 1.4 million = one point four million (1,400,000 = one million, four hundred thousand). Don't forget to use , instead of . other than for the decimal point because actually: 6.554 = six point five five four 152.600 = one hundred and fifty-two point six nought nought

At a quick glance, this online tool seems to give acceptable U.S. English answers: http://www.tools4noobs.com/online_tools/number_spell_words/ In the United States--back in the 1950s!--I was taught NOT to use the word "and" when reading numbers.
