Hi Larry,

You are right about it, "Ni bien"  means you were willing to do something as fast as it was possible, like in a hurry. "Ni bien" can be translated as "as soon as"

Your example:

Ni bien terminé de cenar, fui a acostarme    simple past 
As soon as I finished dinner, I went to bed
