Question about the expression "from... to..." in German. I'm not very clear about the way to express "from...to..." in German, you can find the following examples. 1. E: from left to right G: von links nach rechts 2. E: from head to foot G: von Kopt bis Fuß See, both "from...to..." in English, but they are "von...nach..." and "von...bis..." in German. Why? von ... nach --> usually used when talking about distances. von Berlin nach Hamburg / from Berlin to Hamburg von -- bis --> usually used when talking about time duration von 9 bis 10 Uhr / from 9 to 10 o'clock Your example "von Kopf bis Fuss" is a bit of an exception as it is a German saying which is used to express a state which affects the whole body (wet due to rain, pain)
