élève we use it from the primary school to high school étudiant we use it's fo university

"étudiants" are university's students

A teacher would refer to his/her pupils as "élèves". I might call myself my teacher's student or "étudiant". It's the same group of people in question, just a different perspective; the speaker is different in both cases.
