When can you use ไม่ใช่ versus ไม่ได้เป็น? I used to know the answer to this question when I studied Thai in a classroom years ago, but I forget! I know that you can't use ไม่เป็น when you want to say, "It is not...", so we are taught to say ไม่ใช่ instead. But in some cases, it's appropriate to say ไม่ได้เป็น, such as เขาไม่ได้เป็นนักเรียน. Does that phrase sound more natural than เขาไม่ใช่นักเรียน? When would you choose to use one over the other? Thanks!!

I agree with all of them. However, if you use "ไม่ใช่" in term of question tag, in my opinion, it will be more natural. For example, he is a student, isn't it? in Thai: เขา(ไม่ใช่/ไม่ได้เป็น)นักเรียน ใช่ไหม? This will be make more sense than "เขา(ไม่ใช่/ไม่ได้เป็น)นักเรียน เป็นไหม? I hope this help.

เขาไม่ใช่นักเรียน and เขาไม่ได้เป็นนักเรียน can be used interchangeable. They both are natural.

I agree with 'Fay'. We do say both "เขาไม่ใช่นักเรียน" and "เขาไม่ได้เป็นนักเรียน" :-) Both mean he/she is not a student.
