It attracts the hearer's attention (Listen to me). ええと［e：to］（ええ［e：］・ええっと［e：tto］・えっと［etto］・えっとう［etto：］）Let me see/think 次のことばを必死<ひっし>に考えながら使う。自分<じぶん>のとまどいを表<あらわ>す（ちょっと待<ま>ってください）。We use it while thinking about the next words desperately. It expresses the speaker's puzzlement (Please wait a few seconds). Both them are translated to "Well" in English. Like TonyH said, they are filler words. BUT, ano can also be used in "ano neko" or something like that :D Eto is never used in grammar. And there are also certain "combinations" like Ano, sumimasen ga Eto desu ne And so on. But of course, you could say "eto . . . sumimasen!" but it is not that common...
