This is the way I learned it when I was younger: Prefixes go BEFORE the word. Root words are the MAIN PART of the word. Suffixes go AFTER the word. For example, in "unlikeable": The prefix is "un-" (it means "opposite" or "reverse") The root word is "like" The suffix is "able" (it means "can" or "can be done") When I was in elementary school, my teachers gave us lists of 30-50 related words to memorize every week. For example, one week, the list might look like this: predetermine: to determine in advance premeditate: to plan in advance prescience: knowledge of something before it happens premature: not yet mature etc. I'd memorize lots of words that have the same prefix/suffix together, so you can start to recognize the patterns. Here are some lists you might find helpful: http://teacher.scholastic.com/reading/bestpractices/vocabulary/pdf/prefixes_suffixes.pdf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefix https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffix
