How to correct oral pronunciation? I have always thought of English teachers in China's English pronunciation sounds abrupt. However, as a student, I have to take the teachers taught, so that in my daily study, English speaking sometimes is strange. I fear for my listening tests and usually affect the Exchange! May I ask my friends what better ways can you help me correct pronunciation? Thank you, Oh!

To learn proper pronunciation, you must first hear proper pronunciation. If your teacher is not speaking natural English, you must find material that does speak natural English. The very best way would be to find a native English speaker to talk to. Unfortunately, if you cannot find a native English speaker, the only other way to learn proper pronunciation will take a lot of extra work. You will need to find a recording of a native speaker. This part is easy, either find an English TV show or movie, or you can go online to youtube.com and choose from millions of amateur videos with native English speakers for free. Listening is the first step. The second step is to try to reproduce the sounds. Find a sentence spoken in native English, listen to it, pause the recording, and then try to repeat it. The key thing to listen for is rhythm. English is spoken with stresses and unstresses that, taken together, will form a noticeable rhythm, like in music. After you practice, try to repeat the recording, and speak along with the recording. Try to match your rhythm to the native speaker. It may help if you record your own attempts, so that you can replay them and compare to the native speaker. I hope this helps!

There have been some very good Italki discussions recently in which students have posted links to audio recordings of themselves speaking. Websites like vocaroo.com make this possible. You could start a new discussion, or ask a question here, and get some feedback from us. You could try to speak English in a way which is opposite to abrupt, perhaps like you would with a sensitive child. It may feel strange to you, but it might sound normal to us!

Hello, All of the others suggestions are good, I would add that don't just listen to songs but sing along to them as well. A lot of songs from the 60s and 70s are good for singing as they have words that you can hear clearly. The Beatles are a good place to start for British English pronunciation. If you have access to youtube search for the band or the song + lyrics - then you will be able to see the words as they are sung and you can also sing using these words. Hope this helps Bob
