Lotus
What does LOTE (Language Other Than English) mean in this context? On the application page of Teachers College Columbia University, I was asked to indicate my language proficiency in English and in languages other than English. There are several choices and I was asked to pick "excellent", "good", "fair", "poor" and "none" for my speaking, reading, writing and understanding. I wonder whether I have to take a test for LOTE to prove my picks, or is it up to me what I choose as long as I have belief in my language proficiency? Thanks for your answer.

I cannot answer in the context of the university that you are applying to, but I would suggest that you answer with an honest appraisal as to your ability. If what you are responding to forms a part of any contractual agreement, dishonesty or inaccuracy usually does not work in your favour. It is possible that the questions are purely for audit purposes, so your responses are purely informational rather than forming part of any requirements of entry. Even in this case, your accuracy helps the university as their research is more accurate.

Call/email the college's admissions department and ask. My guess is that they want your self-assessment, but the people who know the answer to that question are also probably willing to answer it.
