I'm not too big a reader but I would recommend the Quarantine series by Lex Thomas: https://www.goodreads.com/series/73934-quarantine

It contains a lot of carnage and death. Just a heads up.

If you want something sweeter you can check out this teenage/romance/tragedy book "The Fault in Our Stars." Warning: this one gets sad.

"I am Not a Serial Killer" is another read I enjoyed. Kinda made me go crazy while reading it and was just an all around nice "thriller-horror" book.
