Doubt about a bad word Hey, there! A few days ago, I was watching an episode of Stranger Things and one of the children said "screw you" to another child. As far I know this is an alternative way to the f-word. Could anyone tell me how offensive can be this "screw you" expression? Is it normal for children to use this expression? I don't think non-natives should ever use bad words, but it is good to know whether they can be extremely offensive or not.

'Screw you' isn't quite as bad as the f-word, but I would still find it pretty offensive, and quite shocking for a child to say under normal circumstances.

In the US at least, it's a pretty mild form of swearing. "Screwed" would probably be the most common form, as in, "He is screwed if he doesn't study for the exam." "The referees screwed us on the penalty calls." The problem with the direct "Screw you", is if you aren't good friends with the person, you could find yourself in trouble quick. You ask your friend for a beer, and he orders you a fruity drink with an umbrella. "Screw you, man!" :) OK "Screw you," to a guy that bumps into you on the south side of Chicago. --- You just got shot.
