A bard is a wandering poet who uses poetry to tell stories and histories. Bards travelled from place to place in the middle ages and before. This was before most of the population of Europe became literate. As a result of this, bards embodied the cultural values and identity of a society. 
Poets no longer do that. TV has replaced them.
