How to say my father and my mother in Thai
Hi, my textbook says:
คูณ แม่ เป็น คน ไทย
คูณ พ่อ เป็น คน อังกฦษ ค่ะ
to mean "my mother is Thai" and "my father is English"
Why does it use koon? instead of cheu or pom if it is my mother?
Thanks!!

The full sentence is "คุณแม่ของฉันเป็นคนไทย คุณพ่อของฉันเป็นคนอังกฤษค่ะ" the meaning of "ของฉัน" or "ของผม" is "my" which will put behind noun. but we speak and write shortly, so we cut "ของฉัน" off from the sentence and we understand it. that why it become "คุณแม่เป็นคนไทย คุณพ่อเป็นคนอังกฤษ"
also the question "why it use koon?"
"คุณแม่ของฉันเป็นคนไทย"
koon is mean 'you' but for this sentence, koon has no meaning.
when we put koon in font of noun (noun for people only, can also be in font of someone's name) like "คุณแม่ or คุณพ่อ" is show more polite, officially and in writing language.
we normally speak shorter and not too polite in speak language
example
"แม่ฉันเป็นคนไทย" this sentence is a short cut from "แม่ของฉันเป็นคนไทย"
Also if we know, who are we talking about, we can also cut "ฉัน" off. then it become "แม่เป็นคนไทย" or "คุณแม่เป็นคนไทย"
I hope, this can help you. It is hard to explain. Hope you successful learning Thai. :)

คุณ is spelt with the short /u/ here.
คุณแม่ เป็น คน ไทย
คุณพ่อ เป็น คน อังกฤษ
คุณ in this case is used as a 'title' to call somebody else in order to show your respect to that person.
You might often see คุณ with somebody's name. e.g. คุณจอห์น คุณเก๋ คุณสุดา etc.
ชื่อ /cheu/ is used when you want to introduce somebody's "name". For example:
ผมชื่อเอเดรียน = I am Adrian. / My name is Adrian.
คุณพ่อของเขาชื่อเอก = His/ Her father is called Ake.
If you want to say "my" mother/ father, then you can say:
แม่ของผม/ คุณแม่ของผม (more respectful) = my mother
พ่อของผม / คุณพ่อของผม (more respectful) = my father
Or you can leave the word ของ,
แม่(ของ)ผม/ คุณแม่(ของ)ผม (more respectful) = my mother
พ่อ(ของ)ผม / คุณพ่อ(ของ)ผม (more respectful) = my father
Most of the time, if the speaker and the listener know whose father/ mother they are talking about, they do not even put the possession in. That's why you saw only คุณพ่อ and คุณแม่ in your book
Hope this helps. :)
