"It takes a heap o' livin' in a house t' make it home."--Edgar Guest. "House" emphasizes the building itself. "In the northern United States, houses are often made of wood." "Home" emphasizes the idea of a place where people live, usually sleeping overnight, usually returning to it whenever they leave. A "home" is not necessarily a "house." For example, caves served as homes for some primitive people. A "house" is not necessarily a home. When it is empty and nobody is living in it, it is not a home--except to a realtor. The word "home" carries association of family, comfort, love, etc. For this reason, in the United States, realtors--people who buy and sell houses--always refer to them as "homes," never as "houses." In their first year of college, students are usually "homesick." To be "homesick" is to feel unhappy and depressed at being away from home. There isn't any word "house-sick."

I would add a few points: A house is not just "somewhere built for one or two family units", as that would also describe an apartment, which is definitely not a house. Also, home isn't necessarily a building - it can be a tent, a cave, a caravan - home is wherever you feel a sense of belonging and security. Also, home has a broader meaning which has nothing to do with a building or a shelter - as an Englishman, I would say that England is home to me, and after living in London for twenty years, I also feel that London is home to me.

Hey vishnu vardhan, how are you? I shall provide you with information regarding the difference between these two words: 1) ''House'': It is generally applied to a structure built for one or two families or social units. ''Your house'' is the building where you live and which you own or rent. E.g.: ''She has moved to a smaller house.'' E.g.: ''I have heard of a new ranch house in the suburbs.'' 2) ''Home'': the word 'home' may be used of an apartment or a private house. That said, it retains connotations of domestic comfort and family ties. E.g.: ''Their home is full of charm and character.'' E.g.: ''He arrived home a little before five.'' E.g.: ''I might finish this work at home.'' * Here is a hint for you: You do not usually say 'I am going to my house' or 'She was in her house'. You say 'I am going home' or 'She was at home'. ** NOTICE THIS: The existence of other words relating to 'structure', such as ''residence'' and ''dwelling'' might just as well have you confused. So, you should know that ''residence'' is characteristic of formal usage and often implies spaciousness and elegance (E.g.: The private residence of the prime minister...''); whereas ''dwelling'' is considered to be a general and neutral word and therefore commonly used in legal, scientific, and other technical contexts (often referring to ''habitation''), for example: ''My friend built a modest dwelling near the pond" or ''Three thousand new dwellings are planned.'' Hope that helps!!!

A physical place versus somewhere you truly belong.
