"Home" emphasizes the idea of a place where people live, usually sleeping overnight, usually returning to it whenever they leave. A "home" is not necessarily a "house." For example, caves served as homes for some primitive people. A "house" is not necessarily a home. When it is empty and nobody is living in it, it is not a home--except to a realtor. The word "home" carries association of family, comfort, love, etc. For this reason, in the United States, realtors--people who buy and sell houses--always refer to them as "homes," never as "houses." In their first year of college, students are usually "homesick." To be "homesick" is to feel unhappy and depressed at being away from home. There isn't any word "house-sick."

I would add a few points: A house is not just "somewhere built for one or two family units", as that would also describe an apartment, which is definitely not a house. Also, home isn't necessarily a building - it can be a tent, a cave, a caravan - home is wherever you feel a sense of belonging and security. Also, home has a broader meaning which has nothing to do with a building or a shelter - as an Englishman, I would say that England is home to me, and after living in London for twenty years, I also feel that London is home to me.
