Hello! Julie's explanation is excellent. I just wanted to add some more detail.
'We aren't told this' (present simple) is a general fact. For example 'we are not told the question before the exam'. This is a rule. They are never told the question before an exam.
'We haven't been told this' (present perfect) has a result in the present. For example 'We haven't been told what to do yet' suggests that the group don't know what to do and are waiting for instructions. This is for a specific situation, not a general fact.
I hope this helps :)

I understand these statements as:
" We are not told this" more of a general, recurring occasion. Social understandings. Hidden rules. We are not told this. (understanding that we have to figure it out for ourselves)
We haven't been told this: more of a specific event or occasion. I would like to know when we will return to work, but we haven't been told this. No one has mentioned it, and I don't know.
