Well, when i was young i was pushed into an English speaking environment, and my English wasn't that good, all i knew was the alphabet and a few basic words so i taught myself by watching movies, TV shows, reading English newspapers and novels. Having someone to practice with also helps, but make sure they know the language otherwise any mistake they make will be passed on to you.
