Chinese tone rules - ke3yi3 (can, may) yu3yan2 (language) is the first pronunced ke2yi3 and the second yu4yan2? Sorry, I should have been more clear. Is ke3 yi3 by itself spoken as ke2 ye3? Is yu3 yan2 by itself spoken as yu4 yan2? So I'm asking if the tone change rule can apply within a word or only two separate words. e.g Ni3 hao3 spoken becomes ni2 hao3. Sorry I'm not studying hanzi at this stage. Thanks.

clair可以预言(ke3yi3 yu4 yan2)the tune are different. well, about ni hao. ni3 means you. but when ni hao or ke yi are together, the tune should be changed. hmm how to say, when tune two words are both 3ed tune what is a bit hard to pronounce. therefore, tune of the first word in the phrase should be changed a little to make it easy. note: this is only a small part in tune changed in Chinese. such as, 姐姐(jie2 jie1)打手(da2shou3)演讲稿(yan3jiang2gao3) here's another e,g. : 东西(dong1xi1) diraction; (dong1xi4) things best luck to you

if what u are said is 可以&语言,the girl upstairs is right if you are saying 可以预言,then the answer should be different so the first可以“keyi" should be pronounced as ke2yi3,the second 预言 should be pronounced as yu4yan2

Hi Richard, Well, there are some tone change rules of 3rd tone. 1) When a 3rd tone is followed by another 3rd tone, it changes to a 2nd tone, E.g. 你好 ni3 hao3 - ni2 hao3 , 理想 li3 xiang3 ( ideal ) - li2 xiang3 2) When a 3rd tone is followed by a 1st, 2nd, 4th tone or a neutral tone, it's pronounced as a half 3rd tone - the first half ( falling ). I want to mention a bit of neutral tone, there is something wrong with Belinda's comment. There are certain syllables pronounced both weak and short, that's neutral tone without tone marks above them. E.g. 妈妈 ma1 ma - mom, 爸爸 ba4 ba - dad, 姐姐 jie3 jie - older sister, 怎么 zen3 me -how But,sometimes, neutral tone makes things different Like 东西 dong1 xi1 - direction, dong1 xi - things/ stuff 地道 di4 dao4 - tunnel, di4 dao - proper Keep up the good work! Liz.
