If I'm not taking a structured class and I am self studying, I like to find a Chinese song that I can tolerate (most of that stuff is too sad for me) and I get the lyrics online, then I listen to the song again and again and again, and any words I didn't know from the lyrics, I look them up, and when I hear the song I try to picture it like a music video in my mind, so I associate the words to images and feelings. It's really a fantastic way to learn if you are musically inclined at all.
