Besides asking people 'how are you(你好吗)?' ang what you've been told, you can start start the conversation with the thing that you assume the person just did.

for example, you meet somebody and you're he/she just back from lunch
A：吃饭去啦？（means 'back from lunch?')
B：是的 / 不是。Then the person you're talking to may respond to that so the conversation goes on...
