What a great movie that is. This is an idiom which just means that if you only focus on work in life and don't do fun stuff, then your life will be boring. In the US, it is common to hear people say. "You know what they say, all work and no play..." Most people don't say the jack part. Also, in the context of the movie I believe it happens when he is starting to go crazy and the leaves it on the typewritter. The idea is that he needs to stop writing, and it is ok for him to do psycho stuff. I looked a little at some dichos and frases, but couldn't find anything equilvaent but maybe some native Spanish speakers know one. Hope that helps, Alan

The shining... all i can remember is redrum redrum... :P "You know what they say, all work and no play makes <njame of person> a dull boy" In the movie it is exactly as Alan posted. The original meaning of the saying is that people need to play and relax every once in awhile, otherwise life would suck. :P It is what people say about themselves when they want to justify taking some time off to do activities outside of work. Or what others say to their friends when they want to remind them that they need to take a break from work.
